We asked people to rate their renovation!

We wanted to know if renovation really sucked. Is it really as terrible as portrayed by the media (and sometimes us)?

Watch our tiktok channel if you lazy to read.

The easiest way was really to stand in the sun for 2 hours and ask people.

So we went to CBD on a weekday noon, and surveyed 50 people.

We got them to rate their experience based on the board above.

There is no middle ground as nobody likes a fence-sitter. There were no other parameters (eg. age, recency of reno, job etc.). Basically, anyone who had done a renovation before could vote.

The results were as follow.

  • Average score was 6.9/10.

  • ~3/4 or 75% of homeowners felt that their renovation was good, while the remaining 1/4 felt otherwise

This result was definitely surprising to us, as we expected the results to be split evenly, or even more towards the “bad” category, given the stigma.

Could the experiment be skewed, such that people are more likely to vote only if it went well for them (fyi we had A LOT of people who didn’t want to vote)?

Or were people who voted more generous with their grading?

Or were they renovation from 20 years ago?

Or could this really be factually true, that poor renovation experiences are indeed overblown?

We can’t prove it, but our gut sense tells us the real number is probably more even than this suggests.

Regardless, this was an interesting experiment for us! Maybe the next one we will do it at one of those recently completed BTO blocks!
