Defect “checkers”

Hate to say it but this defect checkers industry is really getting out of hand.

Watch our tiktok channel if you lazy to read.

Defect checkers is this new wave of occupation in recent years where they supposedly help you check your new BTO or condo, or even post-reno to see if the work is up to standard or not.

Conceptually it sounds good, but in practice?

Let us share some of our experiences.

So about a year ago we went down to one of our homeowner’s BTO for a site visit. We looked across to the next unit and saw so many stickers on their gate. Each sticker is supposedly 1 defect casted by the defect checker.

We kaypo a bit and lifted up the sticker to see, but honestly where is the defect??? And this is only the gate, just imagine how many more stickers are inside!

Why do defect checkers do this? Maybe it gives the impression that they’re hardworking? But of course it is easy to find fault when they are not the ones who have to provide the solution right?

Even in the corporate world for eg auditors, they need to come up with a solution plan. But not these defect checkers. They just say whatever they want, then pack their bags and go.

Another example. One auntie asked us to double check her reno because she hired a defect checker that told her having visible screws in cabinets is a BCA defect. Which cabinet doesn’t have screws???

Another house, the defect checker pasted stickers everywhere. “To me this is a misalignment” “To me this” “To me that”... everything is “to me”. But when you look at it, its all subjective calls.

Homeowners, if you want a defect checker, first thing you should do is to go find your ID or contractor. They might do it for you for free or for a small sum.

If not, at least find someone with credentials. For eg go to our website “Lobangs page” on Pre & Post-Reno Services > Defect Checkers (btw not sponsored).

This guy himself is a contractor so at least you can rest assured that he knows what he’s talking about.

Let us reiterate, the concept of defect checkers is good. If there are real defects, they need to be highlighted.

But we urge all defect checkers to stop making it seem as if everything is a defect when it isn’t.

Defects of course must be fixed, but be fair to the hardworking subcons. 80% of their work is handcrafted and it’s backbreaking work. Earning a living is important but not at the expense of the contractors. Give credit where credit is due, and point out mistakes when it’s made. Not just anything also become a mistake and everything also become a defect.
