Are we spoiling the market for other IDs?

So, here’s a little story from a few weeks back. We bumped into this guy, an interior designer (ID) I didn’t know personally. Out of nowhere, he asks, “Eh you’re the one from Deconstruct?”

I was like, “Oh yeah, you know?”

He said, “You know, my ID colleagues say you damn spoil market, share so much inside info, don’t let them earn.”

"Spoil the Market"? Seriously?

First of all, bro, if we really wanted to spoil the market, the things we could share would probably break your rice bowl faster than you can say "quotation."

This kind of mentality is exactly what’s wrong with the industry.

And sidenote, this firm has… quite a bad rep in the market already, just saying.

The Problem with Overcharging Homeowners

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Should IDs earn? Absolutely.

But do you think it’s right to charge homeowners a 40% margin when the IDs can’t even design or project manage well?

There is no content that we have put out there that isn’t the truth.

And don’t tell me y’all are working harder than us in this industry because that’s just not flying.

Take those “$3,000 lighting discounts” some IDs like to flaunt for example. Is that really a gift from heaven?

The greater likelihood is that it’s just clever markups and kickbacks from elsewhere, spun into some “deal” for the homeowner.

Building a Better Ecosystem

Here’s the thing: we definitely are not here to ruin careers or whatnot

Our goal is simple, and it is to build the most reliable renovation ecosystem in the industry. That means sharing openly about the traps and shady practices that homeowners need to avoid.

There is a reason why till date, there is still much renovation furore among homeowners.

At the end of the day, it’s not about making IDs lose their jobs. It’s about building trust between homeowners and renovation firms. It’s about connecting with firms and individuals who genuinely care about doing the right thing.

So, to all those who think we are “spoiling the market,” let me set the record straight: We are here to raise the standards, not tear the industry down. If that means stepping on a few toes along the way, so be it. The goal has always been clear — help homeowners, expose the nonsense, and build an industry we can all be proud of.

Now, isn’t that worth fighting for?
