Why you Should NOT Discuss Design Theme with IDs

Everyone wants a chio house right?

But heres the thing — simply telling your ID what design theme you want might often lead to miscommunication.

Watch our tiktok channel if you lazy to read.

There are a thousand design themes out there, with the most common ones being scandi and japandi. But the thing is different people have different ideas of what “scandi” and “japandi” are.

Take the two photos below as examples, do you know which is which?

Not to mention, we are not trained in design or architectural background.

Hence if you were to go down the “i want modern lux” or “i want mid-century modern x contemp” conversation with the ID, you run the risk of wasting time, as your impression differs from the IDs.

So, what should you do instead?

When it comes to design themes, the trick is to show, not tell.

Words can only get you so far. Instead of describing what you want, a picture speaks a thousand words.

Think about all the mood boards you see people doing these days. Yes, those are a lifesaver.

Create a mood board for yourself, before meeting your ID.

Here’s how you can create your own:

  1. Gather Inspiration: Start compiling images of spaces, furniture, and styles you absolutely love. Whether it’s from Pinterest, Instagram, or that random blog you stumbled on, save them all.

  2. Think About Colours: Note down the colour palette you’re leaning towards — earthy tones, whites and neutrals, or bold pops of colour.

  3. Combine It All: Put everything into one single mood board. This can be a physical board or a digital one using apps like Canva.

Now, when you show your ID a mood board, you’re giving them a crystal-clear vision of what you want. Images speak volumes compared to just saying things like, “I want a Japandi vibe” (which, let’s be honest, can mean a million things).

With this, your ID will then know what style and finishes you’re aiming for, and they’ll be able to customise their ideas to match your vision.

Isn’t this a win-win for everyone?
