Remember when I explained why shaker doors are more expensive than regular doors in my last post?
Here’s the deal: This homeowner verbally confirmed with our carpenters that they wanted shaker doors for their kitchen. They agreed on the design, talked prices, and were all set. But there was one little thing — they hadn’t paid a deposit or signed a contract yet.
As the carpenter knew the homeowner, he trusted that the deal was good to go, and went ahead to fabricate the carpentry.
But when it was all made, the owners turned around and said, “Oh, sorry, we don’t want them anymore.”
Yeah. Seriously.
So now, our poor carpenters are stuck with a bunch of shaker doors that were made for a job that didn’t happen. And as you can imagine, there are A LOT of them just sitting around collecting dust.
The worst part? Shaker doors are a pain to make. Carpenters hate doing them because they take up a ton of time, money, and effort. So to get hit with this situation is like a double whammy.

Some might call the carpenter naive, some might say they got “scammed”.
Whichever the case, the key takeaway is to get everything in writing.
It isn’t just the homeowners who can get “scammed”. IDs, subcontractors, everything in life.
It might seem like a small step, but it can really save you and your contractor a lot of stress and miscommunication down the line. Trust us, your future self will thank you.
