Not all vinyls are the same

Ask your ID what type of vinyl they are providing you, and whether it suits you.

Watch our tiktok video on this if you lazy to read.

Vinyl flooring is commonly proposed by IDs or contractors, if homeowners are looking for an affordable and easy-to-maintain alternative to tiles.

There are two main things to look out for when it comes to vinyl.

First, not all vinyls are the same.

There are two main types of vinyl.

1. Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT)
2. Stone Plastic Composite (SPC)

We prefer LVT.

SPC, as the name suggests, is not pure vinyl. It comprises of limestone powder, making it cheaper and much harder than LVT.

The following table summarises the differences.

As seen, unless you have a preference for harder floors, LVT tends to be better.

The only downside is if your floor is uneven, it will feel more uneven as compared to SPC.

There are workarounds though. This includes self-levelling or putting an underlayer.

In short, if you do not ask your ID, they might charge you the same price, but for a seemingly more inferior vinyl.

Two, look out for the wear layer

Wear layer is arguably the most important part of the vinyl. It protects the vinyl from scratches and makes it more durable.

Most vinyls in the market have a 0.3mm wear layer, while some are 0.1mm and others 0.5mm.

Of course, the thicker the better.

0.1mm > You are dead
0.3mm > Lasts 5-10 years
0.5mm > Lasts > 10 years

If you are looking to stay in your house for good, a wear layer of 0.5mm might be advisable.

On a side note, we have launched our first ever vinyl groupbuy! Do check it out here. The intention is to bring cost savings to homeowners (up to 20%!), while delivering assured quality vinyls (obviously we only use LVT).

This groupbuy is only made possible as vinyl flooring is one of the most independent trades (i.e. minimal implications on other works), and also most commonly purchased by homeowners!
